Cherrapunjee day trip from Shillong: how to plan it

A practical day-plan for Cherrapunjee from Shillong — what to see, what to skip, what it costs, and how to do it with a shared taxi instead of an overpriced private cab.

Cherrapunjee (Sohra) is 53 km south of Shillong — close enough for a day trip, far enough that you need to start early. If you've only got one day in Meghalaya, this is the one to do. The drive itself is the highlight: a winding descent through pine forest into one of the wettest places on earth, with viewpoints every fifteen minutes.

Here's a tested day plan that works for most travelers.

When to go

  • October to March — clearest views, most waterfalls still flowing.
  • April to June — green and warm; expect afternoon mist after 3 PM.
  • July to September — peak monsoon; this is what Cherrapunjee is famous for, but visibility at viewpoints is hit-or-miss. Bring a raincoat.

Avoid Sundays in peak season — domestic tour buses clog the parking at every stop.

How to get there

Three options, in order of cost:

  1. Shared taxi (Shillong → Cherrapunjee) — cheapest. ₹250–₹400 per seat one-way. Cabs leave from MTC Bus Stand most mornings. Round-trip works if you find a driver willing, or do return separately in the afternoon.
  2. Sumo / private cab — ₹2,500–₹3,500 for the round trip with stops. Worth it if you're 4–5 people and want to control the schedule.
  3. Self-drive (rented car) — ₹2,000+/day plus fuel. Fine if you've driven hill roads before; avoid if you haven't — there's almost no parking at viewpoints during peak hours.

For solo travelers and couples, the shared taxi → private return cab combo is what most people actually do. Outbound on a shared cab, return with a driver booked at one of the Cherrapunjee stops.

A 1-day route that works

Start at 7:30 AM from Shillong. You'll be back by 6 PM with no rushing.

8:30 AM — Mawkdok Dympep Valley View. First stop on the way down. Viewing platform with the road snaking below — best photo of the morning. 20 minutes is enough.

9:30 AM — Wei Sawdong Falls. Three-tiered turquoise waterfall, 15-minute walk down a rough path. Skip in monsoon (the steps are slippery and the bottom is closed off). The most underrated stop on the route.

11:00 AM — Nohkalikai Falls. The big one — 1,115 ft drop, the iconic Meghalaya postcard. The viewing area is paid (~₹30) but maintained. Allow 45 minutes; the tea stalls here do a good Maggi.

12:30 PM — Mawsmai Cave. A short, well-lit limestone cave you can walk through in 15 minutes. Skip if you're claustrophobic; it gets tight in the middle. Lunch at one of the small dhabas just outside Mawsmai village — try the local pork preparations.

2:30 PM — Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang). Best in monsoon when all seven streams flow; in dry months you might see two or three. 30 minutes for photos.

3:30 PM — Eco Park / Thangkharang Park. Skip both unless you're traveling with kids — the views are similar to what you've already seen, and the park entry fees stack up.

4:00 PM — start back to Shillong. You'll be back by 5:30–6:00 PM if traffic cooperates.

What to skip

  • Living root bridges from Cherrapunjee — these need a full day each (the double-decker root bridge alone is a 6-hour hike). If they're on your list, plan to spend a night at Tyrna instead of doing it as a Cherrapunjee day trip.
  • Mawlynnong / Dawki — gorgeous, but they're an entirely different day trip. Don't try to combine.

What it costs in total

Solo, doing the shared-taxi-out / private-cab-back combo:

  • Outbound shared taxi: ~₹350
  • Stops + return cab (split with one other traveler): ~₹1,200
  • Entry fees + tea + lunch: ~₹400
  • Total: around ₹2,000 per person.

For two people, the same trip done as a private round-trip cab from Shillong is ~₹3,000 split = ₹1,500 each, often the better deal once you're a pair. Solo travellers save with the shared inbound.
