Dawki & Umngot river: the practical guide from Shillong
Everything you actually need to know to plan Dawki — how to get there, when the river is clear, boat fares, where to eat, and whether to stay at Shnongpdeng overnight.
Dawki is the photo you saw on Instagram — boats appearing to float on glass, water so clear you can count the pebbles on the riverbed. It's real. It's also a 90 km drive from Shillong on roads that hairpin through the West Jaintia Hills, and the photo is only achievable in specific months. Here's the plan.
The basics
- From Shillong: ~90 km, 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Best time for the clear-water photo: late October to early April. In peak monsoon (July–September), the river runs muddy and dark green — still pretty, but not the postcard.
- Boat ride: ₹600–₹800 for a 4-seater boat, 30–45 minutes. The boatman waits while you take photos. Bargain politely; rates are semi-fixed by the local association.
- Entry to Umngot ghat: small parking fee + ₹20 per person at the river.
Two parts of Dawki
People say "Dawki" but really there are two places:
- Dawki town / Tamabil ghat — the main entry, closer to the Bangladesh border. More crowded, more tourist buses.
- Shnongpdeng — 8 km upstream, smaller, cleaner ghat. Better water on most days. Slight extra drive but worth it.
Most travellers in 2026 prefer Shnongpdeng for the boat ride and stay overnight there. Dawki itself is fine for a day trip but less peaceful.
Day trip vs overnight
Day trip from Shillong is doable but tight:
- 7:00 AM leave Shillong
- 10:00 AM reach Dawki/Shnongpdeng
- Boat ride + lunch
- 2:30 PM start back
- 5:30 PM back in Shillong
If you want to actually enjoy the river without rushing back, stay one night at Shnongpdeng. Several riverside camps offer tent stays (₹1,500–₹3,500 per night including meals). The sunrise on the river is the real reason to stay over.
Combining with Mawlynnong
Mawlynnong is 30 km from Dawki (1 hour drive), so most travellers club them:
- Day plan: Shillong → Mawlynnong → Dawki → Shillong (long day, doable)
- Overnight plan: Shillong → Mawlynnong → Shnongpdeng (overnight) → Dawki morning → Shillong
See our Mawlynnong guide for the village-only details.
Getting there
Three options from Shillong:
- Shared taxi: ₹500–₹700 per seat one way. Cabs leave from MTC Bus Stand and Police Bazar in the morning. Return cabs are scarcer — usually arranged via the same driver or through the camp you're staying at.
- Private cab: ₹4,000–₹5,500 for the round trip from Shillong including stops. Best for 3+ people.
- Bus: there are state-run buses but timings are inconvenient for a day trip; not recommended.
What to bring
- Sunscreen and a hat — there's almost no shade on the river.
- Water bottle — refills are available but not always reliable.
- Cash — most boat operators and small dhabas don't take UPI yet.
- Swim gear if you plan to swim — Shnongpdeng has small spots for a dip; check with locals on safe areas.
- A change of clothes — for kids especially. The boat rides can splash.
What to eat
- Shnongpdeng campsites — most do a basic North-Indian + local Khasi spread. Try the smoked pork preparations.
- Dawki bazar dhabas — quick rice + dal + curry sets, ₹100–₹150.
- Bring snacks for the drive — there's a long stretch with nothing between Shillong and Pynursla.
What to skip
- "Indo-Bangladesh border" photo ops — the actual border is a 30-min detour and the photo isn't worth the time.
- Trying to fit Cherrapunjee + Dawki in one day — opposite directions from Shillong, you'll spend the whole day driving.
Best months, one more time
If the clear water is the reason you're going:
- Nov–Feb: peak transparency, cool weather, fewest mosquitoes. Best window.
- Mar–Apr: clear, warmer. Good window.
- May–June: starting to muddy after early showers.
- Jul–Sep: muddy. Pretty in its own way, but not the postcard.
- Oct: hit or miss — depends on when the monsoon retreats.
