Krang Suri Falls from Shillong: the quiet alternative to Cherrapunji
Krang Suri and Phe Phe Falls make the best day out of Shillong if you would rather swim than queue. Route, timings, fares and what to carry.
Everyone goes to Cherrapunji. Krang Suri, three hours east through Jowai in the Jaintia Hills, is the trip people talk about afterwards.
Why it is different
Krang Suri is a swimming waterfall, not a viewpoint waterfall. The pool below it is genuinely blue in the dry months, life jackets are available at the falls, and the crowd is a fraction of the Sohra circuit.
Phe Phe Falls, a short drive on, is the quieter second stop.
The day
- 7:30 AM — leave Shillong
- 9:30 AM — tea at Jowai
- 10:30 AM — Krang Suri, including the stepped walk down from the car park
- 1:30 PM — lunch at Amlarem
- 3:00 PM — Phe Phe viewpoint
- 8:00 PM — back in Shillong
About 190 km round trip.
What to carry
A change of clothes, because you will get in the water. Proper shoes for the steps down. Entry and life-jacket hire are paid at the falls.
When to go
November to April for clear water. In heavy monsoon the pool turns brown and swimming is unsafe.
