Meghalaya in 3 days: a realistic itinerary from Guwahati
A three-day Meghalaya itinerary that accounts for real drive times and closure days — Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki, with what to book and what to skip.
Three days is the most common Meghalaya trip and the easiest to get wrong. The mistake is treating the map as flat.
Day 1 — Guwahati to Shillong
Land or arrive in the morning. Drive up, stopping at Umiam Lake. Afternoon in Shillong: Ward's Lake, the Cathedral, Police Bazar for the evening. Do not try to add Cherrapunji today — it is 55 km further and two hours each way.
Stay: Shillong.
Day 2 — Cherrapunji
Leave by 7:30 AM. Mawkdok valley, Nohkalikai, the Seven Sisters viewpoint, Mawsmai and Arwah caves, Eco Park. Back by evening.
Avoid Fridays — both caves close for forest department maintenance.
Stay: Shillong.
Day 3 — Dawki and Mawlynnong, or back to Guwahati
If your flight is late, Dawki is doable but long: three hours down, boating on the Umngot, Mawlynnong and the Riwai root bridge, then a three-hour return. Do not attempt it with a flight before evening.
Avoid Sundays — the boatmen do not run and Mawlynnong restricts visitors.
If your flight is early, drive back via Laitlum for the morning cloud instead.
What to skip
The Nongriat trek. It needs a day of its own and you will not enjoy it squeezed in.
