Meghalaya tourism: a straight guide for a first visit
What to see in Meghalaya, how long it takes, what it costs and how to get between places — written for someone planning a first trip, not a brochure.
Meghalaya is small, mountainous and slower to cross than the map suggests. Eighty kilometres can take three hours. Plan around drive times, not distances.
The four things people come for
- The waterfalls — Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Krang Suri, Elephant Falls
- The Umngot at Dawki — clear enough that boats appear to float
- The living root bridges — Nongriat and Riwai
- Shillong itself — cafés, markets, the ridges around it
Where to base yourself
Shillong, for almost every itinerary. Cherrapunji is worth a night if you want the Nongriat trek without a punishing day, and Shnongpdeng is worth one for the riverside camps. Beyond that, moving hotels costs you more time than it saves.
When to go
- October to April — clear skies, clear water, best for photographs
- June to September — the monsoon Cherrapunji is famous for. Waterfalls at their most dramatic, the Umngot brown, some roads unreliable
- March to April — the compromise, and cherry blossom in November
Getting around
There is no train to Shillong and no commercial airport that is useful. Everything comes through Guwahati, then road. Shared taxis run the corridor all day; sightseeing is by day trip out of Shillong.
