Private cab vs shared taxi, Guwahati to Shillong: which to book in 2026

A straight comparison of a private cab against a shared taxi seat between Guwahati and Shillong — what each costs, who it suits, and when the maths flips.

Most travellers on the Guwahati–Shillong corridor assume they have one of two choices: pay per seat and share with strangers, or charter the whole cab from an agent at a markup. There is a third option now — reserve the same shared taxi whole, online, with the per-seat prices visible before you commit. This post is the comparison, written for the family of four landing at LGB tonight.

The honest cost difference

As of October 2026:

What you book Dzire Ertiga Innova Crysta
One shared seat ₹1,200 ₹1,400 ₹1,500
The whole cab (Reserve) ₹3,350 ₹8,150 ₹10,250
Private cab via agency (typical) ₹3,800 ₹9,500 ₹12,000

The Reserve column is per-seat × passenger capacity, with a flat ₹250 whole-cab discount applied. The agency column is what you are quoted on a WhatsApp number scraped off Google — markup, no public price list, variable by caller.

When shared wins

Solo and couple travel. If you are one or two people and the vehicle is a Dzire, you are paying for one or two seats. The other two seats fill with other passengers heading to Shillong. You save ₹1,150 to ₹2,250 against reserving the whole cab, you pay the exact same per-seat price everyone else pays, and the cab leaves when it fills — usually within an hour, often sooner.

The trade-off is real. Shared means strangers in the car for three and a half hours, and a departure window rather than a fixed slot. If you have a flight to catch at the other end, allow for the fill time.

When Reserve wins

Three cases.

Family of four or more. A Dzire reserved whole is ₹3,350. The same four seats, booked individually, is ₹4,800. Reserve is ₹250 cheaper than the sum of the seats because the whole-cab discount applies, and you are not negotiating with an agency. This is the obvious case and the one most people miss, because the historical default is "either shared or go to an agent."

You have luggage or a wheelchair or a dog. A shared taxi has three or six or seven paying seats and no concept of "I need the back row for luggage." Reserve takes the whole cab, and the back row becomes storage without buying a phantom seat.

You want to leave at an exact time. Shared cabs depart when full, inside a one-hour fill window after the time you pick. Reserve means the cab leaves when you say so, because no one else is boarding. The cost of this certainty is the extra seats you are buying.

When an agency private cab wins

Rarely. Two cases that come up:

  1. Multi-day sightseeing with the same driver. If you want one Innova and one driver for Guwahati → Shillong → Cherrapunji → Dawki → Shillong → Guwahati over four days, that is a tour, not a transfer. OTS does transfers (point-to-point); the sightseeing side is on hold while we rebuild it. An agency bundles the driver's accommodation and food into the quote.

  2. Immediate pickup from an obscure address. OTS stands are listed pickup points — the Guwahati arrivals, Paltan Bazar, Kamakhya, ISBT, Police Bazar. If you need a cab from an address that is not one of those (a hotel in Panbazar at midnight, say), WhatsApp us and we will set it up, but a general-purpose agency will dispatch faster for an off-stand pickup.

What "shared" really looks like at OTS

  • Three vehicle tiers only: Dzire (3 passenger seats), Ertiga (6), Innova Crysta (7). Hatchback and Tata Sumo are retired from the picker so the price ladder stays honest.
  • Flat per-seat fare, any pickup spot in Guwahati or Shillong — the airport does not cost extra, Paltan Bazar does not cost less.
  • ₹300 online to reserve the seat. Balance in cash to the driver after the trip.
  • Verified drivers only. One interview per driver, not per trip.
  • Guaranteed trip: once booked, we run the cab. No customer-side cancellation (platform refunds in three cases: we cannot allot a cab, the driver cancels and we cannot substitute, or force majeure).

What Reserve adds on top

  • Every seat yours. No stranger co-passengers.
  • Pick your own departure time; the cab leaves when you say.
  • Flat ₹250 off the whole-cab total.
  • Same ₹300 online, same balance-to-driver pattern.

The decision in one line

Two or fewer travellers, flexible on time → shared seat. Three or more, or a time-sensitive leg → Reserve. An agency private cab is almost always more expensive for the same vehicle and gives you no price transparency.

The booking flow for both is in the box at the top of the homepage — the two tabs ("Share a seat" / "Reserve") show the right prices for your choice before you confirm.
