Shillong sightseeing in one day: the route that works
A one-day Shillong sightseeing plan — Laitlum, Mawphlang sacred forest, Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak — with timings, closure days and what a shared seat costs.
Shillong rewards an early start more than almost anywhere in the Northeast. Cloud fills the Laitlum canyon before nine and burns off by eleven.
The order that works
- Laitlum Canyon — leave by 7:30 AM. This is the whole reason for the early start.
- Mawphlang sacred forest — a guided walk through a Khasi sacred grove, roughly 25 km from the city.
- Elephant Falls — three tiers, short walk down and back.
- Shillong Peak — the plateau from its highest point.
- Ward's Lake and the Cathedral — late afternoon, close to Police Bazar.
Closure days to plan around
- Shillong Peak is shut on Wednesdays — it sits inside an Air Force area
- Ward's Lake is shut on Tuesdays
- Don Bosco Museum is shut on Sundays
A fixed-departure trip plans around these. A driver hired at random on the day often does not.
What it costs
A shared seat on the Shillong day circuit is ₹1,000 per person including parking and tolls. Entry fees at each spot are paid on the day.
