Shillong to Guwahati airport: how to actually catch your flight

The leg that goes wrong most often on a Meghalaya trip is the last one. People spend three days planning the inbound journey and treat the return as a bus they can catch. Shillong to Guwahati airport is 125 km on NH-6 — one unresurfaced section, one truck convoy, and the three-and-a-half-hour drive becomes five. If your flight is at 2 PM and you leave Shillong at 9 AM, you are already behind.

Here is the schedule and the backup plan.

The honest drive time

Shillong to LGBI (Guwahati airport):

• Minimum, 2 AM departure, empty highway: 2 hours 40 minutes
• Normal, 8 AM departure, moderate traffic: 3 hours 30 minutes
• Bad, 11 AM departure through weekend tourist traffic: 4 hours 15 minutes
• Worst case, holiday weekend + landslide detour + Jorabat bottleneck: 5 hours

Note that these are door-to-door times (Police Bazar to LGBI departure gate), not Google Maps estimates. Google reads NH-6 as a 3-hour drive and does not know about the Jorabat section where the Shillong–Jorabat traffic merges onto Guwahati's commercial truck route.

The 6-hour rule

Leave Shillong 6 hours before your flight's departure time, not before boarding. Boarding is 45 minutes before departure. That gives you:

• Up to 4 hours of drive buffer
• 1 hour of airport check-in and security
• 1 hour of contingency (fuel stop, bathroom, slow-moving luggage trolleys)

For a 2 PM flight, leave Shillong at 8 AM. For a 10 AM flight, leave Shillong at 4 AM. The 4 AM departures are routine on the corridor — the first shared cab of the day typically leaves Police Bazar at 4 or 5 AM for exactly this market.

What to book

Shared seat (Share tab). ₹1,200–₹1,500 depending on the vehicle tier, pickup at Police Bazar or MTC Bus Stand in Shillong, drop at the LGBI arrivals forecourt. The cab fills from the stand queue and leaves inside a 1-hour window after your chosen time. Cheapest option — right for solo travellers with a 6-hour buffer.

Reserve (whole cab). ₹3,350 for a Dzire, ₹8,150 for an Ertiga, ₹10,250 for an Innova — flat ₹250 off the per-seat sum. Leaves at the exact time you book, no fill wait. Right for groups of three or more, or anyone with a flight margin under 5 hours.

What not to book. A random local-stand cab the morning of the flight. Walk-up cabs will leave when they fill, which can be 90 minutes after you arrive at the stand. If your flight is at 11 AM, that extra 90 minutes at Police Bazar is the difference between making the flight and sleeping in Guwahati tonight.

The three mistakes that cost people flights

1. Trusting Google Maps. As above — the model does not know NH-6. Add an hour to whatever it says, more during monsoon.

2. Booking a shared seat without time buffer. A shared cab's "I will leave by 8 AM" means "I will leave sometime between 8 and 9 AM depending on when the other three seats fill." If you need to be moving at 8 AM sharp, Reserve.

3. Trying to combine the airport drop with Dawki or Cherrapunji on the way. It does not work. The deviations each add 2 to 3 hours and you cannot predict traffic on both legs. If you want one last sightseeing stop, make it Umiam Lake — it is on the road and adds 20 minutes.

The checklist

• Book the day before, not the morning of, so you are not negotiating at 4 AM.
• WhatsApp confirmation message carries the driver's number and vehicle registration — save it before you sleep.
• Allow 10 minutes for the drive from NH-6 off-ramp into the LGBI forecourt; it is a short loop but packed at peak hours.
• Breakfast at Nongpoh — half-way, roadside, 15 minutes stop. The alternative is airport food.
• Terminal 1 at LGBI handles domestic for all major carriers. Confirm your terminal before you leave Shillong; schedules change.
