Shillong to Guwahati by shared taxi: timings, pickup points & fares (2026)
Heading back to Guwahati after a trip to Shillong? Here's the practical guide — where cabs leave from, when to start, what it costs, and how to skip the wait at MTC Bus Stand.
The return leg — Shillong to Guwahati — is the trickier of the two. Most travellers focus on planning the inbound trip and figure they'll "just find a cab" for the way back. Shared cabs do run frequently, but if you have a train or flight to catch, that approach is risky. Here's how to do it without stress.
The basics
- Distance: ~100 km
- Time: 3 to 3.5 hours, traffic-dependent
- Most common pickup: MTC Bus Stand (Shillong) → Paltan Bazar (Guwahati)
- Active hours: shared cabs run from about 5:30 AM to 6:00 PM. After dark, only private cabs are available and they cost significantly more.
Fares (per seat)
Standard rates on Online Taxi Stand for Shillong → Guwahati:
- Hatchback (Swift, WagonR): ₹650 – ₹800 per seat
- Sedan (Dzire, Aspire): ₹650 – ₹800 per seat
- SUV (Innova, Bolero): ₹650 – ₹750 per seat
- Tempo Traveller: ₹650 – ₹750 per seat
Front passenger seats are at the upper end of each range. Back-middle seats are the cheapest. Pay ₹100 online to confirm, balance in cash to the driver.
Pickup points in Shillong
You have eight options on OTS today:
- MTC Bus Stand — the main hub. Most cabs leave from here, departures every 30 minutes during peak hours.
- Police Bazar — walking distance from MTC, slightly less crowded.
- Khyndai Lad — close to the shopping arcades, fewer departures.
- Lapalang Tinali — convenient if you're staying near the Shillong → Guwahati highway side.
- Mawiong — outskirts, useful if you have heavy luggage and don't want to navigate Police Bazar traffic.
- Polo Ground / Polo Tower — close to the Don Bosco area.
- Laitumkhrah — convenient for travellers staying on the eastern side.
- ISBT Shillong — for inter-city connections.
Pick the one closest to where you're staying. The driver waits there at the slot time — no need to call.
Drop points in Guwahati
- Paltan Bazar Taxi Stand — closest to Guwahati railway station, most common drop.
- Khanapara — useful for travellers heading further east (Nagaon, Tezpur, etc.).
- LGB Airport — direct drop if you have a flight. Allow extra buffer time during morning peak.
- ISBT Guwahati — connecting to long-distance buses.
- Six Mile, Beltola, Adabari, Jalukbari, Maligaon, Kamakhya — useful for specific neighbourhoods.
Best departure windows
For Shillong → Guwahati, the smartest slots are:
- 7:00 – 9:00 AM: cabs fill fastest, road is clearest. Best if you have a flight or train.
- 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: easy availability, mid-day traffic light.
- 2:00 – 4:00 PM: post-lunch lull, but you'll cross Khanapara at peak hour into Guwahati.
- After 5:00 PM: avoid unless necessary. The descent gets dark, and traffic builds up.
If you're connecting to an outbound flight or train, leave at least 5 hours of buffer from cab departure to your scheduled time. The drive is 3.5 hours; add 30 min for pickup, 30 min for traffic at Khanapara, and 30 min in hand. So a 4:00 PM flight from LGB → leave Shillong at 10:30 AM.
What changes vs the Guwahati → Shillong direction
A few things to note:
- Less queue uncertainty going down — cabs fill faster on the return leg because demand peaks Saturday evening + Sunday afternoon.
- Khanapara bottleneck — almost all routes funnel through here on the way into Guwahati. Plan for an extra 20–30 min during peak traffic.
- Cooler in the cab — Shillong is at 1,500m, Guwahati at sea level. By the time you reach Khanapara you'll want the AC on.
- Cash backup — in case the driver wants the balance immediately on arrival, have ₹600–₹800 ready. Most are happy to wait till drop.
Booking ahead vs walking up
For weekday returns, you can usually walk up to MTC and find a cab leaving within 30 minutes. For weekends — especially Sunday afternoon — book online a day ahead. The Sunday 2 PM – 4 PM departures are the most contested seats of the week.
