Kolkata to Shillong: three ways, honestly compared

Planning Kolkata to Shillong — flight, train, or overnight bus plus taxi. Timings, costs, and why most people get the last-mile wrong.

Kolkata to Shillong is a two-leg journey because Shillong does not have a working airport. All three routes bottleneck through Guwahati, and the choice is really "which Kolkata-to-Guwahati leg do I take?" This post walks through the three, with the Guwahati-to-Shillong last mile at the end — the one most people underestimate.

1. Fly Kolkata to Guwahati

55-minute flight, several daily on IndiGo and Air India. ₹2,800–₹5,500 in clear season, ₹2,000–₹4,000 in monsoon.

Best for: most travellers, especially if you value an afternoon arrival at your hotel.

Timing: book an arrival before 2 PM in Guwahati so the 3.5-hour drive to Shillong lands you before dark. Evening arrivals are survivable but you lose the Umiam Lake view on the way up.

2. Train Kolkata to Guwahati

Howrah/Sealdah to Guwahati by Saraighat Express or Kamakhya Express, overnight, roughly 17 to 19 hours. ₹900 sleeper, ₹2,400 AC 3-tier, ₹3,400 AC 2-tier.

Best for: cheap travel if you have the time, scenic for first-timers (the North Bengal section after sunrise is beautiful), and anyone who hates short flights.

Timing: pick a train arriving at Guwahati before noon so the Shillong leg stays a daytime drive.

3. Overnight bus Kolkata to Guwahati

20–22 hours on NH-19 and NH-27. ₹1,200–₹2,000 sleeper. Volvo and multi-axle operators run it.

Best for: honestly, almost no one. The flight is cheaper than people assume and the train is more comfortable. Buses are the fallback when flights sell out around festivals.

The last mile: Guwahati to Shillong

You land or arrive at one of three Guwahati entry points. OTS runs each one.

  • LGBI airport → Shillong: 125 km, 3.5 hours. Primary pickup for flight travellers.
  • Guwahati railway station (Paltan Bazar) → Shillong: 102 km, 3 hours. Primary pickup for train travellers.
  • Kamakhya station → Shillong: 108 km, 3.5 hours. Secondary — most Shillong-bound trains stop at Paltan Bazar, but Kamakhya is where Rajdhanis sometimes de-board.
  • Guwahati ISBT → Shillong: 120 km, 3.5 hours. For bus arrivals.

What a seat costs, per cab:

Vehicle Per seat Whole cab (Reserve)
Dzire (3 passenger seats) ₹1,200 ₹3,350
Ertiga (6) ₹1,400 ₹8,150
Innova Crysta (7) ₹1,500 ₹10,250

Flat fare — the airport, Paltan Bazar, Kamakhya and ISBT all cost the same.

Picking Share vs Reserve

Solo or two travellers. Book a shared seat. Pay ₹1,200–₹1,500 and the cab fills from the stand queue. Cab leaves inside a 1-hour window after the time you pick.

Three or more, or you want to leave at an exact time. Reserve the whole cab. ₹250 off the per-seat sum, no co-passengers, departs when you say.

Both are on the homepage search.

The common Kolkata mistake

Booking a Kolkata → Shillong "direct" package from an agent. There is no direct connection. Whatever the agent sells, there is a flight-or-train leg to Guwahati followed by a taxi, and the price is marked up because the agent is bundling the taxi segment at a non-public rate. Book the two legs separately — flight on Skyscanner / airline direct, taxi on OTS at a published fare — and save 30–40 per cent for the same journey.

Weekend-trip version

Kolkata to Shillong is a two-night, three-day trip at a push:

  • Friday evening: last flight to Guwahati (around 7–8 PM options). Reserve a cab in Guwahati for the airport-to-Shillong leg, arrive Shillong by midnight.
  • Saturday: Shillong + a Cherrapunji half-day if you leave early.
  • Sunday: Return to Guwahati airport by noon for an afternoon flight back.

Tight, but it works. See the 3-day itinerary for a less rushed version from a Thursday evening flight.

In one line

Fly Kolkata → Guwahati morning, Share-a-seat if solo and Reserve if three or more for the last leg, done in Shillong by late afternoon.
