Meghalaya trip cost from Guwahati: what you'll actually spend (2026)

A real budget for a Meghalaya trip from Guwahati — transport, hotels, food, entries and safaris, with the three line items most people underestimate.

Most Meghalaya trip-cost posts give you an "all-in from ₹X" headline and leave you to find out at the hotel that the X was wishful. Here is the real line-item breakdown for a 3-day Meghalaya trip from Guwahati, with the costs that routinely get missed called out explicitly.

The headline

One person, 3 days, Guwahati–Shillong–Cherrapunji–Dawki round trip, mid-range: ₹12,500 to ₹16,000.

That is excluding your flight or train to Guwahati, and the "mid-range" assumption is a ₹2,500 hotel room and sit-down lunches, not street food and a backpacker hostel.

The rest of this post is where that number comes from.

Transport (₹3,600 – ₹8,000)

The biggest variable. Three scenarios:

Solo, shared seats throughout — ₹3,600:

  • Guwahati airport → Shillong, Dzire seat: ₹1,200
  • Shillong → Cherrapunji day trip, shared seat: ₹700
  • Shillong → Dawki day trip, shared seat: ₹900
  • Shillong → Guwahati airport, Dzire seat: ₹1,200

Two people, mix of shared + Reserve for the day trips — ₹6,400:

  • Guwahati → Shillong, 2 shared seats: ₹2,400
  • Reserve Dzire Shillong → Cherrapunji → Shillong: ₹3,500 (full-day charter via WhatsApp)
  • Shillong → Guwahati, 2 shared seats: ₹2,400

Family of four, Reserve everywhere — ₹14,000+:

  • Guwahati → Shillong Reserve Ertiga: ₹8,150
  • Reserve Ertiga for Cherrapunji + Dawki (2 full days via WhatsApp): ₹7,000
  • Shillong → Guwahati Reserve Ertiga: ₹8,150

The Meghalaya shared-taxi model prices day trips differently from transfers because a day-trip cab is yours for the day. OTS does transfers on the website (Guwahati–Shillong both ways) at a flat per-seat fare — ask on WhatsApp for the day-trip rates until we add them to the booking widget.

Hotels (₹4,500 – ₹7,500 for 2 nights)

Shillong has three price bands.

  • Budget (₹1,500/night): dorms and basic rooms near Police Bazar. Clean enough, thin walls.
  • Mid-range (₹2,500/night): Hotel Centre Point, Polo Towers, Isabella Inn. Good location, hot water, breakfast included.
  • Upper mid (₹5,000+/night): Royal Heritage Tripura Castle, Jiva Resorts. For a couple who wants a nicer evening.

Dawki and Cherrapunji have fewer options and are easier as day trips from Shillong — commit to a Shillong hotel for both nights.

Food (₹1,500 – ₹3,000 for 3 days)

A rough all-in for the three days, one person:

  • Breakfast: ₹150 at the hotel or a Khasi stall (jadoh, dohneiiong).
  • Lunch: ₹300–₹500. Orange Roots in Sohra (vegetarian), Trattoria in Shillong (continental), City Hut Dhaba (North Indian). The ones most people regret are the stalls at the viewpoints — ₹400 for a Maggi.
  • Dinner: ₹500–₹800. Café Shillong Heritage, Dylan's Café, Pinewood Hotel's bar.

Vegetarian is easy in Shillong. Beef is on most Khasi menus — eat it if you are into regional food, skip if not.

Entries, safaris, extras (₹1,000 – ₹2,500)

The ones that reliably get missed:

  • Nohkalikai viewpoint: ₹30 per person. Trivial.
  • Mawsmai Caves: ₹30 entry, ₹15 camera.
  • Mawphlang sacred forest guided walk: ₹200 per person for the mandatory guide.
  • Dawki boat ride: ₹600–₹800 per boat (seats 4), 30–45 min. Bargain politely; rates are semi-fixed.
  • Nongriat trek: free entry, but a Khasi guide costs ₹500 if you want one (optional for the main trail).
  • Mawlynnong sky-walk: ₹30.
  • Living root bridge at Riwai (Mawlynnong): ₹20.
  • Elephant Falls: ₹20.
  • Cherrapunji "Garden of Caves" (optional): ₹100.

Add roughly ₹1,500 across a 3-day Shillong-Cherrapunji-Dawki circuit.

The three line items people miss

1. The Shillong → Guwahati airport leg. People price the inbound journey and treat the return as "we'll find a cab." See our catch-your-flight guide for why you want to book this ahead at the same ₹1,200 Dzire fare.

2. The one-hour fill wait on shared seats. The cab is cheap, but if you need to be at the airport at a specific time, the shared seat means waiting for the other three passengers to board. Reserve is ₹250 off the per-seat sum and leaves at your chosen time; often the right call for the time-sensitive leg even when the sightseeing legs are shared.

3. Food at viewpoints. Nohkalikai and the Dawki stalls charge tourist prices. Carry snacks and water from Shillong — Khasi tea breaks are good; Maggi at Nohkalikai is a mistake.

Where to cut (and where not to)

Cut: hotel category (budget is fine for 2 nights), restaurant choice (there are good ₹200 meals), optional entries (skip Garden of Caves if time-tight).

Do not cut: the drive. Walk-up taxis cost the same but leave when they fill; Reserve the time-sensitive legs even on a tight budget. Also do not cut the Nongpoh breakfast stop if you are driving pre-dawn — it is the one break on NH-6.

In one line

Expect ₹12,500–₹16,000 for one person on a mid-range 3-day Meghalaya trip from Guwahati, excluding the inbound flight. Groups of four scale sub-linearly because the transport cost splits.

The transport side is on the homepage — pick Share for solo, Reserve for groups, both tabs show prices before you book.
